Ever curled your hair only to be left with lifeless locks pointing in all directions? We get it, curling can be overwhelming when you don’t really know what you’re doing. But we’re here to change that! So, should you use a wand or tongs? What direction do you curl in? Let us answer your curling Q’s and explain how to use curling tongs for professional curls that last all day long.

Curling Wand vs Curling Tongs

Believe it or not, “curling wand” isn’t just a fancy way of saying “curling tongs”, there is a difference! Curling tongs include a clamp, whereas a wand doesn’t. This can impact the overall style and size of your curls, so it’s important to know what look you want before starting.

Why Use Curling Tongs?

Curling tongs are great for all hair lengths and textures, whereas wands are better for longer lengths. There are so many types with different clamps and barrel sizes that there’s one for everybody. They can create relaxed waves like a wand, or tight curls for a more glam look.

Expert Tip: While tongs can create the perfect curls, you can still curl your hair in other ways. Check out these guides to see how else you can curl locks without tongs:

How to Use Curling Tongs

Now that you know the difference between a wand and tongs, it’s time to master the curling technique and become a pro!

Step 1: Choose the Right Tongs

With a huge variety of tongs, it’s important to choose one suitable for your hair type. Our Rose Gold Curling Iron combines gold and copper for the ultimate styling surface, while the high heat barrels locks in curls for longer-lasting styles. With 20 heat settings and a long cool tip, it offers easy grip for styling comfort and precise control for all hair types.

Step 2: Prep Hair

Before you even think about applying any heat, you need to make sure your hair is fully prepped! We recommend washing your hair, drying fully, and applying a good heat protector. This creates a barrier between delicate strands and the harsh heat, reducing damage and breakage.

Step 3: Section Hair

A crucial step in learning how to use curling tongs? Remember to divide your hair into 25-50mm wide sections. It makes your curling process much easier. It means you can focus on one section at a time so you don’t feel overwhelmed or miss anything! We recommend using a clip or bobble and always sectioning from the bottom upwards to keep everything out of the way easily.

Step 4: Choose a Direction

When it comes to curling directions, you need to decide whether you’ll curl inwards or outwards. For a more natural, beach babe wavy look, curl away from your face. But if you want tight, Hollywood glamour curls, always curl towards your face. For a consistent look that blends together, continue curling in the same direction throughout, or for a more tousled look, try switching the direction as you go!

Step 5: Start Curling

Use one hand to hold the tongs and the other to wrap the strand around the tool. Starting at the root, gently wrap the hair around the barrel down to the tip in your chosen direction. Apply the clamp, and hold in place for 5-10 seconds. Gently slide the tool out to achieve a perfect curl. Repeat on the rest of your sections.

Step 6: Style and Lock In

Once finished, you might want to brush your curls out for a more natural, smoother look. Curls tend to be harder to keep in place than any other hairstyle, so locking your hard work in with a hairspray is a crucial final step. We recommend taking your hairspray and lightly misting it all over your freshly curled hair. For those with stubborn strands, you might benefit from spraying your hair throughout to really lock them in place. Remember, practice makes perfect. You’ll be a pro in no time!
